Species Numbers:  51 Mammals        255 Birds        43 Reptiles

Highlights:

  • - A true wilderness experience, only basic campsites within the reserve
  • - A series of picturesque pans where wildlife gather during the rainy season
  • - Intersection of the Tropic of Capricorn between Molose Waterhole and Moreswe Pan

The name Khutse means "where one kneels to drink" in Sekwena which is the local dialect of Tswana. Khutse Game Reserve was opened in 1971, on Bakwena tribal land and is popular due to easy access from Gaborone despite low wildlife concentrations.

The mineralized pan system within Khutse Game Reserve provides an important habitat for wildlife; attracting herbivores to graze on the grasses of the pans, drink the mineralized water during the rainy season and to lick salt during the dry season. This in turn attracts predators, such as leopard, lion and cheetah.
