Dinokeng Game Reserve launches self-drive route
Dinokeng Game Reserve, the only Big 5 game reserve in Gauteng has been hard at work creating a publically available 70km self-drive route through their reserve. Officially launched on the 16th December 2014, the majority of the route is accessible to sedan vehicles. There are also certain areas (clearly marked on the map) that are only available for high clearance vehicles and 4 x 4 vehicles.
For visitors from Pretoria and Johannesburg, this route now means that the two cities are comfortably within reach of day trip visitors. The drive from Pretoria is approximately 50min and around 80min from Johannesburg. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday or Sunday if city life is getting to you!
Dinokeng are also one of the first private reserves to be listed on the Tracking the Wild platform which means that you can add and share your sightings at the click of a few buttons. The sightings are sent to our conservation partners which means that you will also be making a valuable contribution to wildlife citizen science. The free apps also have some other cool features too including offline maps for the reserve, wildlife hotspots and scpecies guides and checklist. You can download the Android app here or the iPhone app here.

Background: Dinokeng Game Reserve is the first free-roaming Big 5 residential game reserve in Gauteng – and probably in the world – next to an urbanized area. It is a private/public initiative for which planning and development started in the early 2000s. It was officially opened on 22 September 2011 after the introduction of four of the Big 5. The last of the Big 5 to be introduced in late 2012 were the buffalo who have settled in well, with the herd expanding successfully. The reserve now consists of 18,500 hectares of beautiful diverse bushveld with a number of lodges - both catered and self-catering. Expansion is ongoing with the goal of a 100,000 hectare reserve for the future.
Ndlovu Entrance Gate to Dinokeng Game Reserve
Opening Times: The Dinokeng self-drive route is open from 06h:00 to 18h:00. The entrance gates close at 15h:00 to ensure that vehicles are able to finish the route before the gates close at 18h:00.
Bookings: R220 per vehicle as well as a conservation fee of R30 per adult and R20 per child. Booking is available at any of the five gates into Dinokeng Game Reserve or at Dinokeng lodges with the Conservation Paypoint System. Once you have made payment, you will be issued with a permit that needs to be displayed in your vehicle at all times. Vehicles numbers are limited to avoid congestion so it is probably worth booking in advance. Individual vehicles are also limited to 10 people.
